History of the building
The history of the Gehanowska House "Pod Słońcem" located at 43 Main Market Square begins with the establishment of Krakow in 1257. Throughout the centuries, it underwent numerous reconstructions and transformations. This building is the only one that preserved in its underground the przedproża (vestibules) along with the entrance portal to the market square. This was typical in the 14th century when vaulted cellars were constructed adjacent to the fronts of buildings, with terraces on them. This was related to the rapid elevation of the terrain, causing the ground floors of the first houses to become their cellars.
The house suffered a fire in 1475, but it was quickly rebuilt, with an additional floor added at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. It was during this time that the interior layout was established, which has endured to this day.
Over the centuries, the house changed owners and names, including Gehanowska (named after the wealthy goldsmiths from Krakow), Dom Helblinkowski, Koryciński House, and finally, the "Pod Słońcem" house. In the 18th century, it underwent a thorough renovation at the behest of the owners, the Koryciński family, during which reinforcing buttresses were added, and the interiors were adapted.
In the second half of the 18th century, Jan Szaster, the subsequent owner, established the "Pod Słońcem" pharmacy in the house, which survived until the early 20th century (the boiserie from 1793 still existing in the ground floor). He was also a pioneer in pharmacological research at the Jagiellonian University, and lectures and exercises in this field took place in this building.
In the early 19th century, a reconstruction in the Neoclassical style took place, leading to the current facade of the building, except for the ground floor decoration, which was changed to Neorenaissance at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the 20th century, further modifications were made, such as a new Art Nouveau staircase and the adaptation of the attic for residential purposes, as well as facade renovations. The "Pod Słońcem" House is not just a building; it is also a piece of Krakow's history and one of its landmarks.
